Nadine Dorries makes embarrassing gaffe at Tory MPs on radio show

This time, she wasn’t even able to get the basic facts about her own party’s MPs.

In the print edition of The National, we considered creating our default text template “Nadine Dorries made an embarrassing mistake” just to save time… but, unfortunately, “Boris Johnson lied” still holds a little more frequent.

Culture Secretary Dorries has been busy defending the indefensible, that is, the Prime Minister’s actions against partygate.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, she said comments from Tory MPs Nick Gibb and Aaron Bell were ‘disappointing’ but those in ‘marginal’ seats knew the Prime Minister won them.

The Culture Secretary was then asked about the 2019 admission of Red Wall MPs, of which Bell is a member in his Newcastle-under-Lyme constituency.

Dorries said: “So you want to quote Aaron Bell, again disappointingly, I’m going to talk about Martin Vickers, who is in the far north of England in South Tees.

“I will talk about Martin Vickers who is there to support the Prime Minister, listing on Channel 4 News the other night the huge amount of funding and initiatives he has delivered in his constituency.”

Unfortunately, she was wrong.

Martin Vickers (pictured below) is the MP for Cleethorpes in North East Lincolnshire and has been an MP since 2010 with a current majority of 21,418.

Matt Vickers (pictured at the top of this article) is the MP for Stockton South, with a majority of 5,260, and was elected in 2019.

We all slipped up. With Dorries, however, it’s a constant habit.

And take it from a diary – we know how angry people get when names get mixed up! Team Boris needs all the help they can get right now, so they have to be careful…
