Science and Technology Museum recreates broadcasting in Chile 100 years after it was built

Celebrating 100 years of the first radio broadcast in Chile. The Museum of Science and Technology presents a technical sample of the various radial components of the past decades. Also in the halls of the El Mercurio newspaper building is a reconstruction of the first project undertaken in 1922 by Enrique Sazzi and Arturo Salazar.

Radio joined the experiment and was broadcast in this format from the Museum of Science and Technology. About the subject, we discussed with researchers Renato Menares and Francisco Garrido. Both are in charge of technical radio broadcasts.

Renato Menares is a collector of radios, his passion for restoring them led him to search for various radio elements from different years, a large part of his collection is exhibited in the museum. “We discussed the possibility of reproducing the first radio transmissions with components from that era. We are building an AM transmission system.

He further added: “I have been a collector for over 60 years, I have been to Persian fairs looking for old radios and records, I have elements of some of them”,

Francisco Garrido, for his part, explains the characteristics of these radial pieces. “The gear driving this transmission is outdated, basically we have one from 1997 and the most modern one running in 1942.”

“The idea is to make it a real broadcast, reproducing the style of Enrique Sazzi and Arturo Salazar, because they didn’t have a recipe for making a transmitter, they were testing, experimenting”He underlined.

The development of radio a century after its first national broadcast

Regarding technological advances and the development of the radio medium, Garrido explains that: “In 1940 the first FM transmitters began operating in the United States, a sea change as they produced better quality than AM with less interference and noise.”

He continued, “Improving the quality of the microphone made the voice sound clearer. Today it’s not so clear because the technology has changed so much, what is AM radio, we don’t hear it much.

“Another way of transmitting over long distances was improvisation, using satellites and the airwaves. It was in the 1920s that the first radio standards also appeared and allowed each station to have a fixed frequency and not interfere with each other. It gives an order in matters of mass radio transmission,” he concluded.
